Four-time U.S Baton Twirling Champion,
Multiple-Baton Specialist,
(503) 359-9506

For 19 years, I have taught baton at schools, community centers, baton camps, and juggling conventions. I have also performed and taught sample workshops at over 100 school recesses and assemblies. Baton offers an annual Olympic-style National and World Championships, along with State and Regional competitions.

Baton includes learning basic terminology, compulsory twirls/baton-handling, body-technique/positioning/posture, proper releases, variety of catches, rolls, balancing, and exchanges between two or more people. At their own pace, students will gain fluidity in connecting baton-material, with moves in left and right hand, and in forward and reverse directions.

In addition, my baton classes include a variety of props (scarves, beanbags, ribbons) stretching, juggling skills, dance steps/movement, timing with music, twirling games, and opportunities to perform choreographed team routines at community events, and the option to train as a competitor in the sport.

Besides having fun and making new friends, this novel skill develops eye-hand coordination, ambidexterity, concentration, creativity, posture, strength, flexibility, and rhythm.
PLEASE JOIN BATON!!! If you join baton, you will learn the arts ao twirling and juggiling baton! Maybe even be good enough to join the baton competions! Please try it, it will be so fun!

Where: Portland, Oregon area. I teach one-day/week seasonal classes at various schools in Forest Grove, Hillsboro, and Beaverton.

How Old Can You Be To Join?: Baton is for all ages!   Some 3-4 year olds have even done thumb-toss one turns!   My 2-year olds are doing balances, end swings, and full-hand flip tosses (of course, no catches yet)!   The 21 and over age group for National competition has grown over the years, and a few are in their late-30s and one is even in her 40s, and I taught mid-life men baton at juggling festivals.

Who: Jill Edgecomb (a former 4 time USA baton and juggling champ!)

Cost: Cost depends on session length: a 6-week class is $45.00, 7-week class is $53.00, and an 8-week class is $60.00.   In addition, a $5.00 or $23.00 baton is sold to each student on 1st day.

Performance opportunities throughout the year:   parades, fairs, and competitions.

Private Lessons: Private lessons are $25.00/hour, and are arranged for those who want individualized competition/show routines, are serious about training, or want to learn baton at a time/date that’s convenient for them.   A few private lessons in place of a class would allow a child to still perform and compete with the group.

Buying Batons: $23.00 for a professionally sized/balanced baton, $5.00 for a toy baton, $30.00 for glow-baton and $30.00 for hoop baton.

About: USTA (U.S Twirling Association) events are solo, 2-baton, 3-baton, strut, dance-twirl, pairs, men and women’s freestyle, and men’s solo. The baton club includes twirlers from the WA. County area. www.ustwirling.com   is the site for USTA (U.S Twirling Association), and it has the top seasonal newsletter articles, pictures, and information on High School, College, and International competitions, and on judging, coaching, membership, and college scholarships.
